“Tychicus stands as a testament to the beauty of steadfastness and loyalty in the backdrop of the early Christian church. Though not as renowned as Paul, Peter, or John, Tychicus plays a crucial role in the New Testament narrative, embodying the virtues of trustworthiness and dedication. His story unfolds across several books, revealing a man deeply committed to the ministry and the spreading of the Gospel.” -David Guzik
Tychicus
Tychicus will give you a full report about how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper who serves with me in the Lord’s work. I have sent him to you for this very purpose—to let you know how we are doing and to encourage you. I am also sending Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, one of your own people. He and Tychicus will tell you everything that’s happening here.
Tychicus is only mentioned five times in the New Testament, but the ministry he provided was noteworthy. In my NLT Bible there is an insert that labels him a frequent letter carrier for Paul.
So it got me thinking… where do we first meet this man? We first read about him in Acts 20. When the uproar was over, Paul sent for the believers[a] and encouraged them. Then he said good-bye and left for Macedonia. 2 While there, he encouraged the believers in all the towns he passed through. Then he traveled down to Greece, 3 where he stayed for three months. He was preparing to sail back to Syria when he discovered a plot by some Jews against his life, so he decided to return through Macedonia.
4 Several men were traveling with him. They were Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus
Now this would have been Paul’s 3rd missionary journey. In Ephesians 6:21 we get this little insight To bring you up to date, Tychicus will give you a full report about what I am doing and how I am getting along. He is a beloved brother and faithful helper in the Lord’s work
In Paul’s letter to Titus we learned that he planned to send Tychicus to or possibly another man. Titus I am planning to send either Artemas or Tychicus to you. As soon as one of them arrives, do your best to meet me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to stay there for the winter. 3:12
A Trusted Messenger: Tychicus is mentioned five times in the New Testament (Acts 20:4; Ephesians 6:21-22; Colossians 4:7-8; 2 Timothy 4:12; Titus 3:12), each instance highlighting his role as a dependable messenger and a comforting companion. Paul, imprisoned for his faith, often relied on Tychicus not just to carry his letters to various churches across the Roman Empire but also to update these communities about Paul’s situation and to encourage them.
Gotquestions.org says this, “ Later, Tychicus was with Paul in Rome during the apostle’s second Roman imprisonment, and Paul sent him to Ephesus in order to free up Timothy for a visit (2 Timothy 4:12). In both Crete and Ephesus, then, Tychicus was an “interim pastor” of sorts, filling in for Titus and Timothy.”
I love how gotquestions.org sums up what we know about Tychicus. And I quote “We may not know much about Tychicus, but what we do know is impressive and praiseworthy. Tychicus was a trusted messenger, faithful preacher, and loyal friend. Paul placed great confidence in him, sending him to accomplish important works. Tychicus obviously had the ability to minister in a variety of situations, bringing encouragement to those he served. Tychicus surely modeled the quality that all church elders are to possess: “He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it” (Titus 1:9).”
Tychicus exemplifies the virtues of reliability, loyalty, and service. In a time when traveling was fraught with danger, his unwavering commitment to the mission of spreading the Gospel showcases the importance of trust and fidelity in Christian ministry. He reminds us that behind-the-scenes roles are crucial to the advancement of any noble cause. His life encourages believers to serve faithfully, even in capacities that might not garner widespread recognition.
- Ephesians 6:21-22: "Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts."
Tychicus’s story is a beacon for those who support the work of the ministry from behind the scenes, whose faithfulness fuels the spread of the Gospel. In our own lives, how are we embodying the virtues of loyalty, reliability, and service, especially in roles that might not be in the spotlight? How can we support the work of our community to ensure the message of hope and salvation reaches far and wide?
Hope you were encouraged today. Thank you for reading!
