The Power of Encouragement

Hey there, everyone! Welcome back to The Preston Perspective, where we dive into thoughts and perspectives on many topics. Where we take on life’s challenges with a smile, a little humor, and some practical advice. Today we’re talking about something that’s simple but incredibly powerful: encouraging others.

We’ve all been there—feeling down, unsure, or just in need of a little boost. And sometimes, all it takes is a kind word or a supportive gesture from someone else to turn things around. So today, we’re going to dive into how you can be that person who lifts others up and why it matters so much.

WHY ENCOURAGEMENT MATTERS

First things first—why is encouragement so important? Well, think about it: life can be tough. Everyone’s dealing with their own struggles, whether it’s school, work, relationships, or just trying to figure out where they fit in. Encouragement is like a little ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. It reminds people that they’re not alone, that someone believes in them, and that they have what it takes to keep going.

And the best part? It’s contagious. When you encourage someone, it often inspires them to encourage others. It’s a ripple effect that can make a huge difference in your community, your friend group, and even beyond.

If you every think to yourself, "Someone should tell that person good job." You are that someone. If an encouraging thought about another person comes into your mind, share that thought with them.

1 Thessalonians 5 mentions how we are to build each other up. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had."  Romans 15:5

TIPS FOR ENCOURAGING OTHERS

So how do you actually go about encouraging others? Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Tip 1: Be Genuine This one’s key. People can usually tell when you’re being fake, and no one wants empty flattery. So, when you’re encouraging someone, make sure it’s sincere. Focus on what you genuinely appreciate or admire about them. Maybe they’re really good at staying calm under pressure, or they’ve shown a lot of determination in the face of a challenge. Whatever it is, let them know you see it and that it matters.

Tip 2: Be Specific Instead of just saying, “You’re doing great,” try to be more specific. For example, “I’m really impressed with how you handled that tough situation in class. You stayed focused and didn’t let it get to you.” Specific praise is more meaningful because it shows that you’ve really noticed and appreciated what the person has done.

Tip 3: Offer Your Help Sometimes the best way to encourage someone is to offer your support. If you see a friend struggling with something, ask if there’s anything you can do to help. Even just offering to listen can be a huge encouragement. It shows that you care and that they don’t have to go through it alone.

Tip 4: Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection Encouragement isn’t just about cheering people on when they’ve reached the finish line—it’s about recognizing their progress along the way. Celebrate the small wins, and remind them that every step forward is a step in the right direction. It’s okay not to be perfect; what matters is that they’re trying and improving.

Q&A

Question 1: “What if I don’t know what to say to encourage someone?”

Answer:Great question! If you’re not sure what to say, start with something simple. It could be as easy as, “I’m really proud of you,” or “I believe in you.” If words aren’t your thing, you can also show encouragement through actions—a thoughtful gesture or just being there for someone can speak volumes.

Question 2: “How do I encourage someone who’s really down on themselves?”

Answer:This can be tough, but it’s important to be patient and compassionate. Sometimes, people who are really down on themselves need to hear encouragement more than once. Keep reminding them of their strengths, and be there to support them, even if they’re not ready to see it themselves yet. Over time, your positivity and belief in them can help them start to believe in themselves.

If you were going to encourage someone today. What would say?
